Description
A Soxhlet apparatus is a laboratory device used for continuous extraction of a soluble compound from a solid material. It is commonly used when the desired compound has limited solubility in a solvent, but the impurities are insoluble.
The apparatus consists of a round bottom flask, a Soxhlet extractor chamber, a thimble (made of cellulose or filter paper), and a condenser at the top. The solid sample is placed inside the thimble, and the solvent in the flask is heated to produce vapours. These vapours rise into the condenser, where they cool and drip into the extraction chamber.
As the chamber fills, the solvent dissolves the desired compound from the solid material. Once the chamber reaches a certain level, it automatically siphons back into the flask, carrying the extracted compounds. This cycle repeats continuously, making the extraction efficient without using fresh solvent repeatedly.
It is widely used in pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries for extracting oils, fats, and active compounds from natural sources.
